Every other City in the State of Tennessee uses the Hotel Taxes made in their cities to give to various departments and organizations that directly affect the people who pay the taxes, with one exception, Shelbyville. 100% of the current 7% Hotel Tax is given to the Shelbyville-Bedford County Chamber of Commerce, and Independent Non-Profit Organization for the "directed use" of promoting Tourism & Economic Development.
The Hoteliers in Shelbyville, tired of not getting anything done, nor even having a seat on the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce, came together and created the following proposed changes. After speaking with city leaders in neighboring communities, the proposed dispersion of the Tax Funds as proposed by our Hoteliers would put Shelbyville in line with every other city in the state.
These proposals were drafted and written by the Management Company of the BEST WESTERN Celebration Inn & Suites which is Shelbyville's oldest operating Internationally Branded Hotel which has been in operation since 1992, the changes were submitted to City Council Members and Officials in 2014 when they were written, with no response whatsoever.
